Idaho CAN provide
HUMAN RIGHTS for ALL

Thank you for supporting this year's legislation to add sexual orientation and gender identity to Idaho's human and civil rights laws! No one in Idaho should be harassed at school, fired from a job, denied housing or denied public services for no other reason than that they are gay or because of how they personally express their gender.

Lawmakers especially need to hear from straight business owners, parents, classmates, teachers and friends who will stand up for gay Idahoans this year. Please ask people you know who are business owners, business leaders, education leaders, elected official to sign our business endorsement form.

If you live outside Boise, next year we really need voices from outside the Capitol City to travel and represent communities from all across the state.

To show your support and to be sure you are notified when we need help, please SIGN THE ONLINE PETITION and ask your friends to do the same ... be sure to hit the "submit" button at bottom of the form. Your name will be submitted to lawmakers in support of next year's Human & Civil Rights Bill. Read this year's Legislation and see the impressive list of legislative co-sponsors HERE.

ACTIONS TO TAKE

  • PETITION: Sign the ONLINE PETITION, PRINT A PETITION for others to sign, and ask your friends to sign the petition.
  • CONTACT YOUR LEGISLATORS: If you live outside Boise you can have a major impact by writing your district's lawmakers. (Inside all but West Boise, your lawmakers are already supportive). No matter where you live you have one state senator and two state representatives who represent the district you live in. If you live in Boise, please do not contact lawmakers from outside your district except to send thank you notes to co-sponsors and those who vote to introduce the bill. Find out who your lawmakers are and how to contact them here. Tell them it is time to finally end discrimination against gay people in Idaho.
  • LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: No matter where you live, write a Letter to the Editor.
  • LEARN MORE: To find out how to answer common concerns, see the Frequently Asked Questions page. The points on this page can help you with your letter to the editor, your contact with your legislator, and discussions with friends, family, and others.
  • TESTIFY NEXT JANUARY: Since none of the swing votes on the committee are from Boise we need a majority of testimony to come from outside Boise. We do need people from Boise to come and fill the hearing room. If you live outside Boise or know someone who lives outside Boise city limits or has clear connections outside Boise (Eagle, Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell are great too) you can have a big impact. Please let us know if you can travel to Boise on fairly short notice in the next month. We will need people to testify for a weekday morning hearing on adding sexual orientation and gender identity to Idaho's Human & Civil Rights Laws. Please email us if you are interested. We would love to have:
    • anyone with a compelling and clear discrimination story
    • straight business owners (in Boise is OK)
    • couples with children
    • parents of LGBT people
    • teachers/professors
    • school administrators
    • your boss
    • elected officials -- city or county (in Boise would be OK too)
  • SHOW IDAHO YOU CARE:

Download and print your own "Human Rights for ALL: Amend Idaho's Human Rights Act" full size window card or set of smaller window cards for your car.

Please consider posting this sign in the window of your home, car or business this year. It is especially helpful in Boise's downtown while the legislature is still in Session.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR STATEWIDE

Write a letter to your newspaper (addresses below) about the need to end discrimination in employment, housing and education in Idaho. You might also share a story of discrimination or make a statement of support for someone out and gay in your family, someone you know personally or someone visible and gay who you appreciate in your community (you might check with them to be sure it's OK) or you might simply say you support your gay people in Idaho and feel it is time to protect them in Idaho law. See Letter Writing Tips at right for more helpful hints. Sample letters.

LETTER WRITING TIPS

  • ALWAYS include your name, address, and phone number.

  • PLEASE focus on what we want Idaho to be and how others can help achieve equality and end discrimination against gay people in Idaho.

  • When surveyed, 64% of Idahoans said they thought it should be illegal to fire someone because they are or are perceived to be gay.

  • Letters from areas outside Boise are extremely valuable. We will never protect the righs of gay people in Idaho without all our allies speaking up and standing up with us.

  • PLEASE ask friends to also write letters, especially if they live in areas outside Boise. SMALL PAPERS are extremely important. If you have any relationship to a rural part of Idaho please write a letter to that paper, mentioning your connection (once worked there, lived there, have family there etc.).

  • For many of us, the term gay or lesbian is much prefered to "homosexual." No one likes to be defined by their sexual orientation alone.

  • Legislation to include gay people in Idaho's Human Rights Act will be reintroduced again next year. Your letters help make passage possible! Thank you!

  • Thanking Republican lawmakers who have supported this legislation over the years, like Senator Stegner, Senator Coiner or Senator Corder, is very helpful. It helps if you make the point that this issue crosses party lines and is of concern to people regardless of party affiliation, all across Idaho.
